Cavitation is devastating for a shock absorber because it means the loss of damping and therefore something you definitely don't want to experience in your shock absorber. The small bubbles that form in the oil during cavitation can never support the desired damping characteristics of your shock absorber.

Traditionally designed shocks can easily fall victim to cavitation under extreme conditions due to the low pressure behind the piston.

The TTX system was designed by Öhlins development engineers to eliminate the risk of cavitation in the shock absorber. The plan worked. Thanks to the sophisticated pressure balance of the TTX technology, the risk of cavitation was eliminated from the shock absorber.

The “TT” stands for “Twin Tube”, i.e. the two-tube design, while the “X” in the designation indicates the direction of flow or the arrangement of the valves in the shock absorber.
