Cavitation is devastating for a shock absorber because it results in a loss of damping, something you definitely don't want to experience in your shock absorber. The small bubbles in the oil created by cavitation can never support the desired damping characteristics of your shock absorber.
Traditionally designed dampers can easily succumb to cavitation under extreme conditions due to the low pressure behind the piston.
The TTX system was designed by Öhlins development engineers to prevent the risk of cavitation in the shock absorber. The plan worked. Thanks to the sophisticated pressure balance of the TTX technology, the risk of cavitation was eliminated from the shock absorber.
The "TT" stands for "Twin Tube," meaning the twin-tube design, while the "X" in the name describes the flow direction, or rather the arrangement of the valves in the cylinder head of the TTX shock absorber. Thanks to TTX technology, the pressure that normally occurs directly above the piston is directed toward the cylinder head and to the regulators for compression and rebound damping.
It then flows into the free space between the inner and outer tubes on the opposite side of the piston. Thanks to sophisticated bores and well-thought-out channeling, all of this happens so quickly that one could almost speak of a balanced pressure ratio on both sides of the piston.
The reservoir of the TTX damper is only used during compression and rebound of the shock absorber to either collect the oil that has expanded due to heat or that has been displaced by the piston skirt, or to return it to the circuit. The reservoir contains a separating piston between the damper oil and the nitrogen on the other side of the separating piston. The gas generates an oil pressure of six to nine bar, which essentially corresponds to the static pressure on both sides of the main piston.
